Wellington Triathlon

We had a great time in Wellington this weekend. The focus was of course the race, but having 10 Nelson Tri Club members in town made for good company and a few laughs.

We were up at 5am in order to eat and get ready for the 7am start. Despite a very light shower just before entering the sea (whilst it was still dark!) the conditions were perfect. The water was still quite warm, the city and harbour were quiet and there was little to no wind - very rare for Wellington!

Us men got a 5 minute headstart on the women and the swim was bizzarely quite peaceful - it being so dark still! We both got around the swim, bike and run course which stuck to the coast throughout, inside our targets which was really satisfying. B finished in 2:41 and me in 2:17 (the winners got in on the 2hr mark). We both felt really elated and on a high - well worth the months of build-up and training!

We then ate, showered and got back to the course in time to see the elites doing the course... but some way faster than us! Bevan Docherty - world number two (who spent the day with our tri club last year) won convincingly and it was great to see his fluid yet fast technique...
